Have you ever searched Pinterest or even Facebook for some sort of recipe to help soothe your throat when it hurts? I know just how overwhelming it can be to find a recipe that you know will work or is even safe with the hundreds out there.
Essential Oils Are Not the Only Supportive Natural Alternative
First, it is important to know that essential oils are not the only natural and alternative choice to western medicine. They are fantastic to use when we need them but sometimes there are easier and safer alternatives.
Organic and wildcrafted herbs can have a huge impact on soothing a sore throat. I like to use loose leaf herbs like peppermint, chamomile, nettle, and astragalus. Often it is easier, cheaper and just as effective than using essential oils if you can use these in a hot tea.
Another fantastic alternative is an infused raw honey. You can see my recipe here. Honey has been proven in various research studies to be beneficial for soothing allergies, some bacterial infections and even some viral concerns. With honey, it is important to note that it will dissolve when added to teas and other water based drinks. So if you can infuse your raw honey prior to use, you will get many more benefits and will not need essential oils!
Already you may be asking what a hydrosol is. A simple answer is that they are aromatic waters obtained through steam distillation that contain all the water loving components of essential oils. Hydrosols are inherently safer and easier to use internally than essential oils because they are ready for our body to digest! In fact, I use them in my herbal teas as a form of aromatic medicine, my beverages to keep me cool during the summer, and for other uses. The best part about hydrosols is that they are so much more affordable than essential oils!
Soothing Sore Throat Remedy
First, prepare a few loose leaf herbs to make some hot tea. Below are a few I enjoy:
Once you have your herbal tea steeping, add a tablespoon of raw honey or your already infused raw honey to the cup you were going to add your herbal tea too. Next, add your herbal tea to your honey and stir well. Then you add 1 to 2 teaspoons of your choice of hydrosol to your honey from the below options:
If you are interested in getting a few therapeutic hydrosols, you can get them here.
This is a very easy recipe to use for most individuals that need something very soothing for their throat. Please note that this information is not provided to treat, cure or diagnose. If you have a medical condition, please seek counsel from a licensed physician in addition to someone qualified in aromatic medicine.
